Navigating the Green Horizon: Meditrade UK’s Carbon Reduction Plan

21st February 2024

In the dynamic landscape of corporate responsibility, Meditrade UK Ltd. is committed to environmental responsibility, moving forward towards a future free from carbon constraints. This blog post delves into our comprehensive Carbon Reduction Plan, which outlines the journey towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045.

The Road to Net Zero:

Meditrade UK Ltd. has firmly established its presence on the Net Zero horizon, committing to erase its carbon footprint by 2045. The starting point? The year 2021, a baseline against which the success of future carbon reduction initiatives will be measured.

Understanding Baseline Emissions:

Baseline emissions were carefully recorded for the year 2021. Meditrade followed the Carbon Reduction Plans reporting standard and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard, laying the foundation for transparent and accountable emission reductions. The Carbon Reduction Plan cast its net wide, accounting for Scope 1, Scope 2, and select Scope 3 emissions. The details of the calculation process, exemplify Meditrade’s commitment to accuracy. The 2021’s total emissions clocked in at 118.84 tCO2e. Fast forward to 2022, and the numbers nudged higher to 183.23 tCO2e. However, amidst the growth, Meditrade remains undeterred, showcasing a mere 54.2% increase despite substantial business expansion. Our target to achieving Net Zero are not just dreams. Tangible targets have been set, including a commitment to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2035. A forecast of 118.73 tCO2e by 2030 fuels our roadmap.

Charting Progress: The Visual Story

The journey from 2021 to 2045, which illustrates both actual and projected emissions. Despite the upward blip, we are committed to a greener future. For our carbon reduction initiatives. From ISCC-certified Biofuel adoption to LED lighting in office spaces, we demonstrate a 62% reduction in Scope 1 emissions since 2021.

  • Transition to ISCC-Certified Biofuel

Meditrade’s commitment to sustainable ocean shipping led to a swift transition from conventional bunker fuels to ISCC-certified Biofuel. When using Biofuels, the emissions associated with those shipments are 100% “slashed”.  As of September 2022, this green innovation has fully integrated in a small percentage of our shipments. Looking ahead, the plan is to double the utilization of Biofuel in shipments during 2023, amplifying the positive impact.

  • Operational Updates

Meditrade brightened its ecological footprint by implementing LED light fittings across all UK office spaces. This not only illuminates the workspaces but is also a step into a greener future.

  • Employee Well-being and Environmental Impact

The Cycle to Work Scheme wasn’t just about promoting healthier commuting for Meditrade’s employees. It´s to help our achievements to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. By incentivizing sustainable commuting, the initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering a greener workplace.

  • Educating for Change

Meditrade recognizes that sustainable change begins with awareness. Engaging employees through Carbon Reduction Educational Awareness training programs is a crucial step. By nurturing a culture of environmental responsibility within the workforce, the company ensures that every team member becomes a steward of positive change.

  • Supplier Accountability

Meditrade holds its key suppliers to the highest environmental standards. Requiring our main suppliers to possess environmental certificates equivalent to ISO 14001 or FSC and directing disclosure of targets and actions ensures that sustainability isn’t just a Meditrade endeavour but a shared commitment throughout its supply chain.

  • Certification of Commitment

The ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification is more than just a badge. It’s for our ongoing dedication to systematically manage the environmental impact, ensuring that every facet of the company adheres to the highest standards.

  • Green Transportation Strategies

Meditrade envisions a transportation strategy that integrates low-carbon modes, such as electric vehicles, into its operations. By optimizing delivery routes and consolidating shipments, the company aims to minimize the overall distance travelled, contributing to a cleaner transport network.

  • Supplier Collaboration for a Greener Future

Beyond its borders, Meditrade plans to encourage its suppliers to adopt sustainable transportation practices. Setting sustainability targets and providing incentives for reducing carbon footprints will turn suppliers into crucial partners in the shared mission for a sustainable future.

Eco-Designed Logistic Hub

The acquisition of a new logistic hub is not just about expanding infrastructure; it’s a stepping stone to move towards an eco-design. With Net Zero technology, passive design elements, LED lighting, and sensors, Meditrade aims to enhance its logistics with a blueprint aligned with the Construction Playbook.

  • Carbon Offset Program

Acknowledging the inevitability of some emissions, Meditrade plans to implement a carbon offset program. Investing in renewable energy or carbon capture projects will ensure that unavoidable emissions are counterbalanced, contributing to a net-zero impact.

  • Lean Supply Chains

Efficiency is at the core of Meditrade’s vision. By adopting lean production principles and reducing waste throughout the supply chain, the company aims not only to minimize environmental impact but also to optimize operations for a sustainable future.

  • Transparent Progress Tracking

Meditrade is committed to transparency. Regular measurement and reporting of progress ensure that the Carbon Reduction Plan remains a living, breathing document, actively steering the company towards its environmental goals.

  • ISO 50001 Energy Management System Implementation

The journey to sustainability involves managing energy wisely. The implementation of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System is a strategic move towards efficient energy utilization, aligning with Meditrade’s commitment to holistic environmental responsibility.

Ongoing Education and Awareness:

The journey doesn’t end with initiatives; it’s sustained by knowledge. Meditrade’s commitment to ongoing carbon reduction education and awareness training ensures that the entire organization remains informed, engaged, and aligned with the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability.

As we blend our past successes with future ambitions, Meditrade UK Ltd. isn’t merely outlining a Carbon Reduction Plan; we’re narrating a journey of environmental responsibility.
